About:

John Maclure Community School is located in the beautiful Fraser Valley city of Abbotsford, BC. This Canadian city is located about 60km east of Vancouver. The school is a K-5 school with approximately 370 students.

Our school offers an effective Early Literacy Program including Reading Recovery and guided reading. We also have a strong ESL program, and a variety of behavioural support systems organized by our Youth Care Worker. 

Facilities:

Driving up to John Maclure Community School you will notice the two large murals that greet all of our guests.  During the summer of 2019 a Thunderbird Totem was erected at our front door.  This totem was carved by a local artist and honours the indigenous student population at John Maclure. These are only part of the beautiful grounds that surround our building.  To the south of the main building and behind you will find several picnic areas as well as 2 large soccer fields, 3 softball diamonds, a new adventure playground, a gaga pit, and paved basketball courts. The school itself features a large gymnasium, grade appropriate technology in each classroom, and a large library which also is utilized for STEM (Science,Technology,Engineering and Math) activities.

Special Programs:

Our strong academic programs which features: two full time Learning Support teachers who focus on targetted reading, writing and math support, two full time ESL (English Second Language) support teachers who support learners during class time, an Aboriginal Cultural worker who provides all our Indigenous students with extra help in literacy development as well as learning about Indigenous culture.   At lunchtime, thanks to our full time Youth Care Worker, our children are able to enjoy plenty of facilitated outside games and activities.  Our Intermediate students have the opportunity to participate in many intermural and extra curicular sports such as basketball, soccer, and track and field.  Recess and lunch times and many times afterschool, you will find the gym at John Maclure fully utilized for these sport activities.

Sports:

At lunch, our Intermediate teachers facilitate many different outdoor activities for all our students to participate in. Intermediate students are invited to play Intramural games are played in the gymnasium and supervised by our teachers. Our school also has Intermediate basketball and soccer teams who practice after school and challenge other teams in our school district.
